FOLSOM, N.J. -- Through competitive bidding, the Bridgeton Housing Authority recently awarded a 15-month natural gas supply contract to South Jersey Energy. The company is the deregulated energy marketing subsidiary of Folsom, N.J.-based South Jersey Industries (NYSE: SJI). South Jersey Energy's bid of $3.83 per dekatherm of natural gas beat prices offered by both Conectiv and Hess for the project.
Company officials estimate the Bridgeton Housing Authority's savings to be approximately $20,000 by the end of the supply agreement. The Bridgeton Housing Authority is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. South Jersey Energy begins supplying the natural gas in June.
"Using our expertise of the local natural gas market enabled us to produce a highly competitive bid yielding savings for the housing authority and ultimately taxpayers," said Doug LeJambre, general manager, Commercial and Industrial Sales for South Jersey Energy.
Through the New Jersey Energy Choice program, individuals, businesses and groups may choose a non-utility energy supplier for the commodity of natural gas and electricity. Presently, South Jersey Energy is the leading deregulated energy supplier in South Jersey as it supplies over 50,000 natural gas and electricity customers combined. The company is New Jersey's first deregulated energy marketer and began supplying industrial customers with natural gas in the early phases of energy deregulation in the 1980s.
