South Jersey Energy Reaches 60,000 Customers


    Folsom, N.J. -- .Edward Graham, president of South Jersey Energy, (www.southjerseyenergy.com) the deregulated subsidiary of South Jersey Industries [NYSE:SJI], announced today that the company has reached 60,000 residential customers far surpassing its 2002 year-end goal. SJE has increased its customer base by 88% since the end of 2001 when it reported 32,000 residential customers, making it the most successful energy marketer in New Jersey.

    Graham cites many factors to explain the company’s explosive growth. However he is quick to point to the guaranteed savings SJE offers its customers. “Consumers are attracted by the guaranteed savings we offer on their utility bill," said Graham. “With the heating season approaching, consumers will be looking for ways to save money on their energy costs. Our guaranteed savings is certainly one of the best ways for them to save money. This is why we continue to add between 500 and 1000 new customers every week.” When consumers choose SJE as their natural gas supplier they not only save on average about $40 each year on their heating bill, they also receive a $25 gift certificate to Home Depot or Acme.

    Another key factor in SJE’s success is that the company is headquartered locally and is an integral part of the community. While some other marketers have come and gone, SJE is in the business for the long-term. “We’ve been a part of this community for many years”, said Graham. “Consumers know that when they choose SJE we’ll be around to serve them.”

    The Community Rewards program has also played a role in the company’s success. SJE created the highly successful Community Rewards program to maximize opportunities in the deregulated market.

    The program benefits community organizations by allowing them to earn money while assisting SJE in its residential marketing efforts. SJE benefits by adding a profitable retail customer at a reasonable acquisition cost. “The Community Rewards program helps us to serve the community and accomplish one of our business objectives,” said Graham. “When we can achieve both of these goals simultaneously it is truly a win-win situation for everyone.”

    South Jersey Energy is a licensed, deregulated energy supplier for commercial, industrial and more than 60,000 residential customers. SJE acquires and markets natural gas and electricity to retail end users and provides total energy management services to help commercial and industrial facilities reduce their overall energy costs.

    SJE has one subsidiary, SJ EnerTrade (EnerTrade) formed in 1997, primarily sells natural gas to the casino industry in Atlantic City, N.J. The company also markets an air quality monitoring system through AirLogics, LLC. SJE and GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., an environmental consulting firm, each have a 50% equity interest in AirLogics. This system provides companies with real-time environmental air monitoring system used during environmental cleanups.
